EDline provides the opportunity for online discussion of matters editorial and editorial business, and to provide prompt answers to vexing questions. At some stage everyone working with words has a question to which they cannot readily find the answer; EDline is the forum for posing that question. (Computer-related issues, including using software for editing, are covered by Grapevine, our computer-related mailing list.)
EDline was started as SFEP-ED-L in September 1996, moderated by Jane Kerr and Iain Brown for the then Society of Freelance Editors and Proofreaders (now the Society for Editors and Proofreaders). It was intended as a discussion forum for people working in an editorial capacity within the UK publishing industry. SFEP-ED-L became EDline in March 1997, when the mailing list was opened up to anyone involved in the preparation of the written word for publication, including editors, proofreaders, indexers, translators, writers and typesetters, regardless of their location.

EDline is available in three formats: automated, automated digest and digest forms. It costs nothing to subscribe to any version.
By subscribing to the automated EDline mailing list, you will receive e-mails immediately they are posted to the list. (Note, though, that the volume of mail generated by the automated list can be high.) An alternative is to subscribe to the automated digest mailing list, where our listserve software collates all individual messages each day and sends them to subscribers.
If, however, you wish to receive EDline postings in an orderly fashion, you should consider subscribing to the digest version. The digest version is moderated and messages organised into sequential threads. EDline digests are e-mailed usually once a week, sometimes more frequently. You may wish to subscribe to the digest if you are too busy to read daily postings sent by the automated list, are away on holidays or ill.
