[5] Bookmarks [6] Administration =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= --[1] Editorial ---------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the first issue of EDline! As we said in last week's issue, this discussion list has developed to such an extent that it is time to open the list up to a wider audience. We will be sending out announcements in the very near future regarding the Web aspects of this new project, and the new URLS for back issues and archives. In the meantime, keep sending in the messages and bookmarks! Jane Kerr and Iain Brown Moderators --[2] Q & A -------------------------------------------------------- [2cc] Date: Tue, 25 Mar 1997 From: Jane Kerr, bywater@zetnet.co.uk Subject: Quoting bulleted lists Is there a standard/recommended way of handling a quoted bulleted list? All of the options that I can think of leave lots to be desired. For example, if you put your quotation marks around the whole thing (bullets and all), it looks rather peculiar (i.e. with an opening quotation mark before the first bullet). Putting the quotation marks at the beginning of the first item and the end of the last one also looks a bit strange, and putting each item inside its own set of quotation marks seems a bit excessive, and is also illogical, because the whole list forms a *single* quotation (so it shouldn't really need lots of sets of quotation marks). Does anybody have an elegant and sensible solution to this problem? --[3] FYI ---------------------------------------------------------- [3s] Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 From: Martyn Yeo, wordwise@cix.compulink.co.uk Re: _Faux pas_ of the week? I received six copies of SFEP-ED-L 2.12 this morning, all with an 11:11:15 timestamp. This caused me no inconvenience (as I have a fast modem) but I thought you would want to know. With thanks for your efforts on our behalf. [Mod's reply: Yes, well, um, er ... what more can I say, except to apologise, and to reassure you all that I am not flaming you! I have changed ISPs to ensure that future issues are not duplicated. I sometimes think some companies are taking the business philosophy "Total Quality Service" a bit too far.---IDB] +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ [3rr] Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 From: Christina Malkowska Zaba, cmmz@lexis.demon.co.uk Subject: Congratulations! Congratulations to everyone concerned on the decision to broaden and open this list to all involved in the business of editing and usage. I think it's an excellent initiative, the Net being the medium it is, to allow for the unpredictable, unexpected and open- ended! I hope the new open forum goes from strength to strength. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ [3ss] Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 From: Eddie Kent, eddie.kent@mcr1.poptel.org.uk Subject: New words and usages 'If everyone under thirty starts calling petrol gas you can't compete. You've got the grave against you.' - Leslie Sellers: Doing It In Style, Pergamon 1968. The Times recently had a letter from a correspondent who noticed extensive use of the word 'prepone' in India. It took me ages till I realised that by getting my car insurance early at the time of the last budget and thus saving five pounds I had preponed buying it. --[4] Business matters --------------------------------------------- [4h] Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 From: Josephine Bacon, 100270.3224@compuserve.com Subject: How much? I was recently offered a 15,000 word job involving both editing a British edition of the book and americanising the text for a total of 400 pounds. The job was very long and tedious, there were a lot of mistakes (it was a very poor translation) and it took me far longer than I expected. I probably made a loss on it. The same company has now offered me the job of anglicising a very long cookery book (about 150,000 words) for the same amount! How much do you think I should charge? --[5] Bookmarks --------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 30 Mar 1997 From: Jane Kerr, bywater@zetnet.co.uk This one is a really good site, and well worth checking out: < http://www.bookshop.co.uk > In addition to all the services you would expect from an internet bookshop, you can search a catalogue of over 900,000 titles. There is also a comprehensive list of links to over 150 publishers' web- sites, divided into General and Academic. There is an internet directory of published writers at: < http://www.writers.net > This site includes links to discussion groups, and - for those of you with ambitions to move up from editing to authoring - a directory of literary agents who do not charge reading fees! --[6] Administration ----------------------------------------------- EDline provides the opportunity for a weekly online discussion of matters editorial and editorial business. * POSTING MESSAGES TO THE LIST All messages to be posted to the list should be sent to Jane Kerr, at: bywater@zetnet.co.uk Include as the subject line, "EDline [topic]", where [topic] is the subject under discussion.
