One of these is the Australian writer John Morrison (British emigre, member of Realist Writers Group, ALS Gold Medal in 1963, Patrick White Award in 1986); born in 1904 and according to the text still alive. I have scoured the net (including various Australian literary sites) and come across a passing reference to his dates as 1904-1998, but would like to confirm the year of his death before including it in the text. Is there any kind person with easy access to an authoritative source who could confirm this date for me, or perhaps point me towards a website I may have missed? ------------------------ Date: Thurs, 10 Aug 2000 From: Geoff Palmer, gdp@lineone.net A fairly quick COPAC Author/Title Search yields the following (from amongst 264 results of a search for "John Morrison"!): Author(s): Morrison, John, 1904- Title Details: The best stories of John Morrison Publisher: Penguin, 1988 Physical Desc.: 265p, pbk ISBN/ISSN: 0140117415 Subject(s): Short stories in English. Australian writers, 1945- - Texts Document Type: Short stories Language: English This suggests that he is indeed still alive ("1904-"), as long as the COPAC compilers have up-to-date information. If you want to run a more detailed check, visit < http://copac.ac.uk/copac/ > ---------------------- Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 From: Rachel Kress, r.kress@fss.uu.nl > "Author(s): Morrison, John, 1904- > Title Details: The best stories of John Morrison > > Publisher: Penguin, 1988 Doesn't look like much proof to me, the book is from 1988, unless COPAC are incredibly diligent. I had a look and didn't turn up much, as the Australian papers charge to search their archives. But there is a 'John Morrison short story award' not something usually inaugrated until after one's death. < http://www.writers.asn.au/awards.php3 > There is a contact us link on this site, why not ask? ---------------------- Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 From: Geoff Palmer, gdp@lineone.net I agree with you that one COPAC entry isn't proof of anything -- and of course details could have been imported unchecked from CIP copy. I was merely suggesting that COPAC was one avenue that could be explored. Perhaps direct contact with a rather more recent publisher of John Morrison's work might yield an answer. ---------------------- Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 From: Kathleen Lyle, Kathleen@klyle.demon.co.uk Why not try contacting one of the Australian editorial societies to see if they have any way of finding out? You could start of the Society of Editors (NSW) whose web address is < http://www.users.bigpond.com/socednsw > ---[5] Bookmarks ---------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2000 From: Iain Brown, iain.brown@ucl.ac.uk Writers, Artists and their Copyright Holders < http://www.lib.utexas.edu/hrc/watch.html > Almost everything you need to know about copyright but were afraid to ask ... ---[6] Just for fun -------------------------------------------- A quick IQ test -- the question Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2000 From: Graeme Nadin, g.nadin@teleregion.com This has got to be one of the most interesting intelligence tests. I promise, there are no tricks to the test. Read this sentence: FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE- SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIF- IC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS. Now count ALOUD the F's in that sentence. Count them ONLY ONCE: Do not go back and count them again.
