I have never heard any objections to brainstorming in Canada,
except mine: It is often used when what the author means is
"discuss". Brainstorming refers to a particular type of
freewheeling thinking, generating wild ideas, which can then be
sifted through. The term is often used without enough thought
about what the students are actually supposed to be doing.

Very intrigued to discover (a) the source of such proliferating
tribal taboos, such as not using 'brainstorming', and so (b) able
to judge what weight to give them. Did Judith Willson's editor's
reader identify from which educational circles this dullard's
health warning emanated? A teacher of any merit could surely grab
an opportunity to use a real word (in or out of context) to
enliven the pupils attention and quite possibly their education?
Restriction to a list of approved words without connotations
surely signals the death of language....
