Now known as the Society for Editors and Proofreaders, the organization has moved closer to recognition as a professional body with the introduction of membership tiers that reflect skills and experience. The former Society of Freelance Editors and Proofreaders is retaining the familiar initials SfEP, which since its foundation 13 years ago have become synonymous with support and training for freelances. That will not change: supporting members' business interests and promoting their services through the SfEP Directory remain core activities alongside the society's training and mentoring programmes. But the dropping of 'freelance' from its name signals the abolition of voting restrictions on employed members. "We'd like to welcome more in-house colleagues as members," says Naomi Laredo, Chair. "They may have felt like second-class citizens in the past; now we're offering them full participation in their professional society." The new structure furthers the SfEP's aims of "encouraging high standards of editing and proofreading and upholding the professional status of editors and proofreaders". Admission to ordinary membership is restricted to those who hold the society's Accreditation qualification or can demonstrate professional competence; advanced membership is for those who are Registered or can show substantial experience. New entrants to the profession and other supporters of the Society's aims are welcomed as associates, and corporate associateship is available to publishing companies and interested bodies. Individual associates with relevant qualifications and experience may apply for ordinary or advanced membership at any time.
