Date: Tues, 2 April 2002 From: Jane Kerr, bywater@ntlworld.com My problematic author uses the word "intervision" fairly frequently. I'm not sure if this is a management jargon word. For example, he writes about "Intervision at regular time intervals ...", where it seems to refer to some sort of discussion or meeting. Has anyone else come across this term? It's just possible that it's a mistranslation of a Dutch term. ------------------------ Date: Tues, 2 April 2002 From: Roger Whitehead, rgw@office-futures.com More likely it's "intervention" but I like the implication of occasional quick peeks to see that things are on course. Alternatively, it could be (semi-)proprietary jargon from some organizational consultancy. ------------------------ Date: Tues, 2 April 2002 From: Sally Lansdell, sally@lansdell.com I work on management books and I've never heard of it. Mistranslation of interview? ------------------------ Date: Tues, 2 April 2002 From: Victor Dewsbery, translation@dewsbery.de I have come across that word (albeit in German). It is like group supervision, only on a peer to peer basis, i.e. without a leader or moderator. I have come across it in counselling and psychological help circles. Supervision is when a counsellor (or group of counsellors) meet with a supervisor to speak about their work, ask and be asked questions and receive help where necessary. "Intervision" is when a group of counsellors of more or less equal status meet to share their work experience and "supervise" each other. I don't know whether it is used in the corresponding circles in the English-speaking world, or whether there is some other term to describe this sort of meeting. ------------------------ Date: Tues, 2 April 2002 From: Jane Kerr, bywater@ntlworld.com Victor Dewsbery wrote: > I have come across that word (albeit in German). Victor, I think you've hit the nail on the head - the author is a psychologist, and he uses the word in connection with counselling in the work place. ------------------------ Date: Tues, 2 April 2002 From: Simon Cauchi, cauchi@wave.co.nz But we still need to find out what the corresponding English term is. Perhaps it is "intervision", but the only meaning given for the word in the OED 2nd edn is "Inter(national) (Tele(vision)", the East European equivalent of Eurovision. It's a proper name, with cap I, and the quotations all date from the 1960s. I haven't checked the OED additions volumes, but the word "intervision" isn't found in NODE or the Oxford Dictionary of New Words. ------------------------ Date: Tues, 2 April 2002 From: Jane Kerr, bywater@ntlworld.com Simon Cauchi wrote: > the only meaning given for the word in the OED 2nd edn is > "Inter(national) (Tele(vision)", the East European equivalent > of Eurovision. Now *there's* a terrifying prospect! ;-) ------------------------ Date: Tues, 2 April 2002 From: Roger Whitehead, rgw@office-futures.com "Beolorussia, nul points". ----------------------- Date: Wed, 3 April 2002 From: Victor Dewsbery, translation@dewsbery.de A spot of Google turns up a number of hits (although they have to be separated from uses of the word for various television or Internet services). A number of the hits are from non-native English speakers. However, a psychotherapists group in Washington (USA) states: We draw on the skills of internationally known experts in PBSP as well as arrange mutual supervision (intervision) among PBSP practitioners in the greater Washington area. An NLP training group in California offers a course in: "Intervision Skills" - Co-coaching, peer & self assessment, And an education training college in Dundee, Scotland, offers the following session: Intervision. This is an opportunity for local and international practitioners of Video Interaction Guidance to share practice. You will meet in groups of 5 with, as far as is possible, practitioners in the same field as yourself. You will have 30 minutes each. Each group member will show a short clip of their practice illustrating what they are pleased with and a current working point. The group will then reflect together on possible ways forward for the practitioner to consider. So this seems to be a new concept that hasn't hit the dictionaries yet. After all, it's folks like you and me that write the dictionaries. ----------------------- Date: Wed, 3 April 2002 From: Jo Rudd, jorudd@sia.net.au Thank you, Victor, for a really useful email. It's printed and in my Indexing file. This group is a great source of information. Thank you, all! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= END OF EDline 7.91 Admin page: < http://www.electriceditors.net/edline/admin.htm > ** The views expressed in this mailing list are strictly those of the individual contributors, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the moderators or of the Electric Editors. ** Articles (c) 2001, 2002, by individual contributors Design (c) 1996--2002 Iain Brown Compilation (c) 2002, Iain Brown / The Electric Editors =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
