Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 From: Anna McCormack, mccormack@goulburn.net.au Can some kind persons help with this question, arising from a maths textbook at an urgent stage: How do you spell 'rhombicosidodecahedron'? Should it start 'rhombo' before the 'icosi'? Should the 'icosi' be 'icosa'? (My maths dictionary isn't up to this, and we won't bother asking the spell checker.) +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ ** [2xj] Strike rates in cricket Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 From: Anna McCormack, mccormack@goulburn.net.au Can some kind persons help with this question, arising from a maths textbook at an urgent stage: What is a 'strike rate' in cricket? Is it something per 100 balls? Is it counted in runs? --------------------- Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 From: Iwan Thomas, iwan@iwanthomas.plus.com It's the number of runs scored per hundred balls for a batsman (usually expressed as a percentage), and the average number of balls bowled per wicket taken by a bowler. Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 From: Anna McCormack, mccormack@goulburn.net.au Can some kind persons help with this question, arising from a maths textbook at an urgent stage: Dieticians have a formula for calculating a person's daily energy requirement (E), which goes: E = BEE x A x I where BEE is a factor linking sex, age, weight, height in metric units; A is an activity factor; I is an injury factor. I think this formula gives an answer in calories and needs a factor x 4.187 to bring it to kJ. Is anyone familiar with it? ----------------------- Date: Thurs, 6 Feb 2003 From: Merv Littmann, mervynn@ozemail.com.au I asked a dietician your question, and she replied: To answer your question, the following is a formula (Harris Benedict Equation) for calculating Resting Energy Expenditure (REE): Women REE (kj) = 2741 + 40W + 7.74H - 28.35A REE (kcal) = 655 + 9.56W + 1.85H - 4.68A Men REE (kj) = 278 + 57.5W + 7.74H - 19.56A REE (kcal) = 66.5 + 13.75W + 5H - 6.78A A= age; W= weight in kilograms; H= height in centimeters To calculate Energy Allowances, REE is multiplied by an activity factor (AF) appropriate to age and gender. AGE Women Men 19-24 1.60 1.67 25-50 1.55 1.60 51-75 1.50 1.50 If a person has heavy activity patterns, their Energy Allowance should be adjusted to 2.0 x REE or higher. Hope that helps. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= END OF EDline 8.10 Admin page: < http://www.electriceditors.net/edline/admin.htm > ** The views expressed in this mailing list are strictly those of the individual contributors, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the moderators or of the Electric Editors. ** Articles (c) 2002--2003, by individual contributors Design (c) 1996--2003 Iain Brown Compilation (c) 2003 Iain Brown / The Electric Editors =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
