I am unconvinced. Does anyone have the authoritative answer? ---------------------- Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2003 From: Mark Hendy, markhendy1@compuserve.com As a noun it's ok. As a verb, no - should be two words. Like takeup/take up, speedup/speed up etc. ---------------------- Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2003 From: Marissa Carruthers, marissa_carruthers@hotmail.com I think that nowadays 'markup' is accepted but may leave a lot of people thinking that you have made a mistake. I think that I would use 'mark-up'. In 'The Oxford Guide to Style', it states that compound terms may be spaced, hyphenated or closed, so i think that generally it is up to you. ---------------------- Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2003 From: Steve Rickaby, srickaby@wordmongers.demon.co.uk Marissa Carruthers wrote: > I think that nowadays 'markup' is accepted but may leave a lot > of people thinking that you have made a mistake. I think that > I would use 'mark-up'. I was remiss about stating the context: this is 'markup/mark-up' as in HTML tagging. It does seem that the consensus is that 'markup' is ok in this context only, grating though on my nerves as it does :-( As do all such synthetic compounds: I sometimes think that English is turning into German. I was following a van the other day that proclaimed that its owners were specialists in 'waterfilters'. Urgh. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= END OF EDline 8.16 Admin page: < http://www.electriceditors.net/edline/admin.htm > ** The views expressed in this mailing list are strictly those of the individual contributors, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the moderators or of the Electric Editors. ** Articles (c) 2002--2003, by individual contributors Design (c) 1996--2003 Iain Brown Compilation (c) 2003 Iain Brown / The Electric Editors =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
