=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= EDline Vol. 8, no. 34 (3 April 2003) Editorial mailing list (digest version) Published by the Electric Editors =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Contents: Q & A [2xt] Oxford Style Manual =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ---[2]-- Q & A -------------------------------------------------- Date: Tues, 1 April 2003 From: Iain Brown, iain@iainbrown.net Can anyone tell me the ISBN of the new Oxford Style Manual (the long-awaited corrected March 2003 reprint)? (Just to remind you, the 2002 edition --- yes, the one riddled with errors --- was entitled "Oxford Guide to Style", which is most definitely the one I *do not* want.) I need to buy it, but want to make sure that I get the correct edition! ------------------------ Date: Tues, 1 April 2003 From: Katie Lewis, katie@farnfilm.com Some confusion here. The Oxford Style Manual is ODWE and the Guide to Style rolled into one. As far as I'm aware this has only been for sale (so far anyway) through book clubs, and comprised the uncorrected impressions of both books. I don't know whether they have done a newer version with corrected impressions of both. The corrected impression of OGS is still called Oxford Guide to Style and therefore has the same ISBN. You can identify it in a shop by making sure it is lacking the number 1 at the end of the reprint info (10 9 8 7 etc.) on the copyright page. Harder to ascertain by mail order. ------------------------ Date: Tues, 1 April 2003 From: Jennifer Bassett, jenny@daypotts.demon.co.uk The title has not changed. It is still The Oxford Guide to Style, and the ISBN of the corrected reprint is 0-19-869175-0 (I have the corrected book in front of me as I type). It is not a new edition so I assume that the ISBN is the same as the first impression. The imprint page shows (by the deletion of the '1' in the line of impression numbers) that it is the second impression, and the text on the imprint page is centred, whereas in the first impression it was ranged left. If ordering by post or internet, with their concomitant automatic systems, there may be no way of ensuring that you get the corrected, second impression. Personal inspection at a bookshop might be the most reliable method! ----------------------- Date: Wed, 2 April 2003 From: Michael Fitch, michaelbfitch@supanet.com I can confirm that both versions do have that same ISBN - I haven't disposed of the old one yet. The quick way to tell them apart is that the corrected one has the price $25.00 (as well as GBP16.99) on the back of the dust jacket. But maybe it's safer to check the impression numbers, as above. ----------------------- Date: Wed, 2 April 2003 From: Iain Brown, iain@iainbrown.net Many thanks to Jenny and Katie for clearing up my confusion about the Oxford Guide so promptly. The need for editors to have the 'correct' (read latest?) editions of style manuals etc does raise again the question of what are essential books for our profession (or is it a craft? Or even a devotion?!). On EDline some time ago, we did compile a list, which I don't think I have uploaded to the Website. I'll dig it out, upload it and ask for contributions / amendments. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= END OF EDline 8.34 Admin page: < http://www.electriceditors.net/edline/admin.htm > ** The views expressed in this mailing list are strictly those of the individual contributors, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the moderators or of the Electric Editors. ** Articles (c) 2002--2003, by individual contributors Design (c) 1996--2003 Iain Brown Compilation (c) 2003 Iain Brown / The Electric Editors =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
