  News from the Society of Indexers

  Indexing the medical sciences, 2nd edition, by Doreen Blake,
  Michele Clarke, Anne McCarthy and June Morrison, the latest
  title in the Society of Indexers' newly redesigned series of
  Occasional Papers, is now available by mail order from the
  Society.

  This publication is intended to provide guidance concerning the
  pitfalls and possibilities in medical indexing, and includes
  many interesting and specific examples. The text of the previous
  edition has been extensively rewritten, and advice is given on a
  wide range of topics including terminology, the choice of
  headings, journals indexing, the indexing of names and final
  preparation of the index text. There are new sections on
  electronic indexing, the ethical aspects of changing language
  and gene nomenclature. There is a comprehensive list of
  reference materials including up-to-date Website addresses, and
  of course, an index.

  The four authors are all experienced indexers, well known in
  their field. In addition, they have sought comments and
  contributions from Drusilla Calvert, Liza Furnival, Jill
  Halliday, Kathleen Lyle and Jan Ross. This booklet will be an
  invaluable resource for librarians, archivists, indexers and
  others wishing to gain insight into the field of medical
  indexing.
