Proof-*correcting* symbols are particularly important for proof- correcting. They are also used when copy-editing but do not require marginal marks, which are essential when correcting a proof. The thoughts outlined in the digest suggest to me that the correspondents aren't really clear about the difference between copy-editing and proofreading.
