Since then the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) has grown into a professional body with over 1200 members, and now it has become a company limited by guarantee. As an incorporated body, the Society -- can enter into contracts in its own name; -- may hold copyrights and patents; -- limits its members' financial liability to just £1. Restructuring the Society began in March 2002, when the SfEP changed its name and logo. At the same time, membership tiers were introduced that reflect skills and experience, furthering the SfEP's aims of encouraging high standards of editing and proofreading and upholding the professional status of its members. -- Both freelance and in-house editors and proofreaders are encouraged to join the Society. -- Admission to ordinary membership is restricted to those who hold the SfEP's Accreditation qualification or can demonstrate professional competence. -- Advanced membership is for those who are Registered Proofreaders or Copy-editors or have substantial experience. -- New entrants to the profession and other supporters of the Society's aims are welcome to join as associates. Associates with relevant qualifications and experience may apply for ordinary or advanced membership at any time. -- Corporate associateship is available to publishing companies and other organizations engaged in publishing and related activities. The SfEP's accreditation test in proofreading was launched in 2002. Available only to members and associates of the SfEP, the test is the outcome of several years of development, piloting and rigorous evaluation by the Society's Accreditation and Registration Board. The Society offers an extensive programme of training courses aimed at all levels of the profession and run at centres across the UK, with generous discounts on fees for SfEP members and associates.
