Is the principle being used to determine case the type of word or its size? Should it be "Is" or "is"? ---------------------- Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 From: Jane Lyle, jlyle@indiana.edu If you're following Chicago style, verbs of any length are capped in titles. So "Is" and "Be," even though they are only two letters long. I'm not sure whether other style manuals advocate that short verbs be lowercased, but I do know that we get them that way in a lot of manuscripts! ---------------------- Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 From: Richard Leigh, leighcopyeditor@aol.com Isn't it only prepositions that should have initial lower case? ---------------------- Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 From: Susan Bramson, slbramson@aol.com What about articles- a, and, the? I thought they were always lower case in titles. ---------------------- Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 From: Samantha Wauchope, swauchope@fuschia.net Yes, although and, like but, for etc., is a conjunction - they're lowercase too. ---------------------- Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 From: David Ibbetson, isserlis@rogers.com Susan Bramson wrote: > What about articles- a, and, the? Yes, it was my getting "is" so often that led me to doubt my own thinking that "Is" is right! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= END OF EDline 8.76 E-mail address for posting messages or replies: < edline-digest@electriceditors.net > Admin page: < http://www.electriceditors.net/edline/admin.htm > ** The views expressed in this mailing list are strictly those of the individual contributors, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the moderators or of the Electric Editors. ** Articles (c) 2003, by individual contributors Design (c) 1996--2003 Iain Brown Compilation (c) 2003 Iain Brown / The Electric Editors =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
