Apologies for any cross posting. British Computer Society Electronic Publishing Specialist Group Email as a Publishing Medium Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London Wednesday 10 March, 10.00 am to 5.00 pm < http://www.epsg.org.uk/meetings/email2004/ > Email newsletters are not often discussed within the context of publishing as a whole, but they are becoming one of the most ubiquitous forms of publishing. Some newsletters are distributed to closed groups, such as members of an organisation, or customers of a company. Other email newsletters can be signed up for on a web site. Most are free, some are charged for. There are also some kinds of email discussion group which in their content and function approach the traditional definitions of publishing. Electronic newsletters have as wide a range of applications as physical print-on-paper newsletters. Some exist to provide updated information on a topic of interest, others help to keep people in touch, while yet others may be overtly commercial, providing information on a company's new products. This meeting aims to look at all aspects of email communications used as publishing. First we will have an overview of the whole topic. Then we plan to cover technical aspects, including how to host a newsletter, how to maintain lists, available software, and variations on format (e.g., HTML styling, use of graphics, links to web sites). We will also address questions of quality, the commercial aspects (can you make money doing this?) and, of course, the legal aspects. Email newsletters should not become "spam" - and recent legislation about whom you can keep on your mailing list will be explained. Finally, there will be a panel discussion covering the issues and problems of email publishing. This will include most of the speakers as well as a number of other people who run electronic newsletters and discussion groups. Speakers will include (subject to final confirmation): William Hann, founder of the well-known FreePint Newsletter (http://www.freepint.com/), who will give an overview of email as a publishing medium. Roy Johnson of MANTEX Information Design (www.mantex.co.uk), producers of the Mantex newsletter on topics related to writing, typography, design etc. Roy will look at the practical how-to-do-it side of things to attract customers Paul Phillips, Head of Technology, OgilvyInteractive London (http://www.ogilvy.co.uk/o_interactive), a leading advertising agency that has carried out business-to-consumer email work for companies that include Nestlé, AmEx and BT. Paul will discuss technological challenges in e-mail user experience Andy Pye, Managing Editor of Pro-Talk Ltd (www.pro-talk.com), a UK-based internet publishing company which produces several email newsletter and website combinations in the industrial and scientific sectors. Andy will consider the production of newsletters for the business-to-business market, covering income streams and business models. Christine Reid of Manches Solicitors (www.manches.com), who will talk about the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. At the above URL you will find this information plus details of conference and membership fees, and a downloadable booking form. Details are also given about how to reserve a place by email. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= END OF EDline 9.7 E-mail address for posting messages or replies: < edline-digest@electriceditors.net > Admin page: < http://www.electriceditors.net/edline/admin.php > ** The views expressed in this mailing list are strictly those of the individual contributors, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the moderators or of the Electric Editors. ** Articles (c) 2003, 2004, by individual contributors Design (c) 1996--2004 Iain Brown Compilation (c) 2004 Iain Brown / The Electric Editors =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
